Getting the year off to a rousing start will be the 29th Palm Springs International Film Festival scheduled from January 2-15, 2018. This year promises to be even more special with the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards scheduled for Sunday night, January 7, midway through the festival. The festival plans to present vocalist Mary J. Blige with the Breakthrough Performance Award for her performance in Mudbound at its Film Awards Gala and Saoirse Ronan with the Desert Palm Achievement Award for her spot-on performance of Lady Bird Johnson in the film Lady Bird. Also receiving the Desert Palm Achievement Award will be Gary Oldman for his amazing performance of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour.
One of the most anticipated film screenings this year will certainly be the opening night screening of The Post, starring celebrated actress Meryl Streep as the indomitable Katherine Graham and veteran actor Tom Hanks as Ben Bradlee. The Steven Spielberg produced, suspense filled story of The Pentagon Papers will offer a seldom seen side of the Nixon White House. Bradley was a Kennedy Administration insider and Graham was the world-renowned publisher of the Washington Post for more than twenty years following the suicide of her husband in 1963.
Boasting an incredible 400 screenings of over 175 films from a whopping 70 separate countries, the Palm Springs International Film Festival is one of the largest festivals of its kind in the world and considered the run-up to the Academy Awards in February, with eagle eyed film watchers taking a cue from the festivals awards as a harbinger of things to come from the Academy. Many of the films screened at the festival go on to win Oscars every year.
One of the festival’s signature events is “Power of Words: Book to Screen” which explores the connection between written works and the silver screen. Introduced to the Festival in 2015, this innovative sidebar to the festival illuminates the often-complex ways in which the written word inspires film. The two-day event consists of one day of film screenings and a second day of symposium which includes writers and screenwriters exploring the complex relationship between literature and the cinematic world.
