Every Veteran’s Day is special but this one will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. That hard to forget “Day of infamy” will live forever in history as we look back on the thousands of lives lost and the beginning of the Second World War. November 11 is the 20th Annual City of Palm Springs Veterans Day Parade followed by a patriotic concert and a fireworks finale all happening in Downtown Palm Springs starting at 3:30 PM. The parade will get underway at Palm Canyon Drive and Ramon Road and will then head north concluding at Alejo Road.
A whopping 20,000 spectators are expected this year, although this is always one of the largest Veteran’s Day events in the nation. Palm Springs is one of only 60 designated locations in the country by the Department of Veterans Affairs for recognition of their Veteran’s Day parade. Thanks to our close proximity to the Twenty-nine Palms Marine Base we always have a huge turnout of military personnel and veterans along with their families. I think that is what makes our particular celebration so special.
The Palm Springs High School Spirit of the Sands Band will perform post parade, followed by a huge fireworks finale. This year’s theme is “Honoring All Who Served” and indeed they will be doing exactly that. The parade is always open to the public and of course admission is free. There is no better place to spend Veteran’s Day and no better opportunity to honor and celebrate the contributions of the brave men and women of our Armed Forces.
The downtown location makes this a perfect time to have lunch before the parade at one of the sidewalk cafés or remain for a dinner at one of the world-class restaurants along Palm Canyon Drive or any of the areas in and around the beautiful City of Palm Springs. November weather is as perfect as weather can be but do bring a jacket or sweater for the evening as our desert nights really begin to cool off once the sun goes down this time of year. Go out and make it a great week and don’t miss the chance to enjoy a Veteran’s Day celebration with your friends and neighbors here in the Coachella Valley.
