It is always a pleasure to welcome the very gifted Diane Schuur to the Coachella Valley. On May 5, 2017 she will take the stage at the beautiful McCallum Theater at 7 PM for a gala concert entitled Rhapsody & Blues, accompanied by renowned pianist Paul Cracchiolo and our own local Buddy Rogers Youth Symphony. This event is part of the 2016-17 season, which also happens to be the 24th year for the Coachella Valley Symphony as our local community orchestra.
Their mission is to perpetuate live Symphony music as well as to provide public performance venues for both youth and adult musicians. They provide education and encouragement for young, up-and-coming musicians as they cultivate diversity among individuals and within the presentations themselves. A well established and elite organization, the Coachella Valley Symphony is one of the finest organizations in the Valley. So much more than entertainment, they seek to educate and engage the entire valley.
This is not the first time we have welcomed the incredibly gifted Diane Schuur, and she always plays to a packed house. The American jazz singer and pianist has released 23 albums and extended her jazz repertoire to encompass elements of country music, pop, gospel and even Latin. She is a Grammy award winner from both 1986 and 1987 for Best Female Jazz Vocal Performance and has been nominated three other times.
Schuur has displayed her talents at Carnegie Hall, the White House, and the Kennedy Center so you can imagine what a thrill it is to welcome her again to the McCallum Theater. Among the artists she has performed with are Frank Sinatra, our own Barry Manilow, Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Stan Getz, Vince Gill, and Alison Krause. A remarkable talent, she has been blind since birth, and has absolute pitch memory and a crystal-clear vocal tone. In 2000 she was awarded the Helen Keller Achievement Award by the American Foundation for the Blind.
It is our great privilege to enjoy her musical gifts once more. Don’t miss this wonderful concert and be sure to stay tuned for the 2017-18 season announcements later on this year. This is the perfect opportunity to make a night of it with dinner at one of our superb local restaurants followed by Rhapsody & Blues at the McCallum. Go out and make it a great week and we hope to see you there!
