On Sunday April 28 the Shoopy Scramble Charity Golf Tournament will turn out to support a great cause: skin cancer. If there is a down side to living in paradise it is probably Melanoma. Our almost constant sunshine plays an important role in the causes of skin cancer and premature aging. We all know we need to use sunscreen religiously but that is not always enough.
The world famous Lucy Curci Cancer Center of Excellence at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage is there to help. With new and innovative ways to prevent, detect and treat Melanoma they are obviously one of the most important medical resources in the entire valley. On April 29 we will observe Melanoma Monday as we seek to raise awareness and heighten education regarding skin cancer.
The tournament this year will be played at the beautiful Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert. Surrounded by majestic mountain views and luxury amenities, it is the perfect place to spend any weekend but especially one that involves golf. Anytime I can play golf and benefit a worthy cause, I am there as I’m sure you are too. The Awards Dinner and Silent Auction are planned as usual but this year there will also be a BBQ luncheon on the driving range as well.
Everyone will meet for a 6PM cocktail hour before dinner and an opportunity to review the excitement of the day’s events. Brett Shoopman is the event chair and always does an incredible job of putting it all together. His dedication to eliminating skin cancer and making sure treatment is available through fundraising is an inspiration to all of us who care about the health of our valley residents.
May is actually Skin Cancer Awareness Month and the Lucy Curci Cancer Center has a list of events planned for everyone. Free cancer screenings, lectures and patient education materials are all available at the center which is located at the Eisenhower Medical center on Bob Hope Drive in Rancho Mirage. Living under the sun is usually healthy and always wonderful, but it is important to use prudence and good judgment to protect our skin from overexposure.
This has been a busy season here in the valley and it is not over yet. We are seeing the lowest interest rates in decades and one of the best inventories of luxury estates ever. I am always glad to see new people coming in who appreciate the relaxed desert lifestyle and are able to enjoy all we have to offer. There is simply not a better place to live on the planet. I hope your season has been an awesome one and hope to see you out on the Desert Willow Golf Course!
