Spring has arrived in the Coachella Valley and along with it, the highly anticipated Kraft Nabisco Championship 2013. For the past 42 years at Mission Hills Country Club has played host to the event on its 72 par Dinah Shore Tournament Course. For those of us who are lucky enough to live in this amazing valley we know it just doesn’t get any better than this particular tournament. From April 1-7 the most prestigious tournament in women’s golf will take center stage in beautiful and local, Rancho Mirage.
Always played for charity, the purse this year is $2 million. With more than 80,000 local residents struggling with hunger issues, it is always great to know that tournaments such as these make the effort to assist the local food banks and hunger programs with their generous contributions. Last year’s gift of a new Kraft Foods Mobile Pantry truck really made a difference for so many valley families.
I can’t help but think back on previous tournaments and all of the amazing winners we have enjoyed. Last year of course, Sun Young Yoo gave everyone a surprise ending to a great game and in prior years we have watched such luminaries as: Staci Lewis, Yani Tseng, Brittany Lincicome, Lorena Ochoa, and Morgan Pressel to name but a few. Tellingly, many golf pros have made the Coachella Valley their permanent or secondary home. Given the dozens of professionally designed and meticulously maintained golf courses in this valley, that is quite understandable.
I recently read that our valley has the highest concentration of courses in the world, so it is little wonder that our golfing reputation precedes us.
I suppose it doesn’t hurt that our spring weather is as perfect as it gets anywhere on the planet. I am really looking forward to watching defending Champion Yoo out on the course this year. The South Korean native may have earned the nickname “Course Clown” but her golf swing is dead serious in competition. Professional since November 2004, she has a long career ahead for us all to enjoy.
If you have not already done so, go to the website below and check out the packages available, book your accommodations, and get ready to bask in the Palm Springs sunshine during what will invariably be one of the premier weeks of the entire season. If you decide to stay we would love to have you and I have plenty of listings situated on the best golf courses in the valley to show you. Looking forward to seeing you at the Tournament in April.
