For the 32nd consecutive year the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians will celebrate their gala Powwow over the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend at the fabulous Fantasy Springs Resort and Casino. Starting at 5pm on Friday, November 29 the Grand Entry will be at 8pm. Then, on both Saturday and Sunday the Powwow will be in full swing from 11am until 8pm Saturday Night and until 6pm Sunday night.
With dancers and visitors coming in from Canada and all across the United States we can expect to see some of the best competitions our local Powwows have to offer. Historically, Native Peoples have come together often to celebrate the important events in life, to socialize, and to honor each other. It is always a time of cultural reflection, joyous dancing and singing, contests and games.
Trading is also an important element of any Powwow so this is the time to get some Christmas shopping done and purchase exquisite hand-made jewelry, blankets, clothing, leather goods and more in a variety of Native designs and patterns. Of course no Powwow would be complete without Indian Fry Bread and Navajo Tacos, two of the best reasons I can think of to drive out to Indio and take in the festivities.
Dozens of dancers will compete for prize purses worth thousands of dollars in all age groups from children to seniors. Bird Singing will also be a big part of the planned events, along with Hand Drum Singing and competitions. This is also a perfect time to teach your children about Native American customs and culture. The Powwow in inter-tribal and will feature many different tribes of both the United States and Canada.
Don’t forget to spend some time at the beautiful Cabazon Cultural Museum and take a stroll in the footsteps of the ancient Cahuilla who settled this valley centuries ago. Now a federally recognized tribe, the Cabazon Band owns the beautiful and spacious Fantasy Springs Resort and Casino in Indio. Top name headliners appear weekly and there is always something entertaining going on at Fantasy Springs.
So, after the family dinners and socializing over the long weekend, take some time to enjoy the Powwow, soak up some Native culture and take in a show. Hope to see you there!
