December is always one of the most celebrated months of the year here in the greater Palm Springs area. The holiday season has arrived, the snowbirds are in town, and every day brings a new and exciting event to delight both young and old. What would The Season be without the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway? Even though we enjoy the Tram every month of the year, there is something absolutely magical about winter at the top of the Tram. For one thing, it’s the only place I know of that can offer snow play within a few minutes of the desert floor!
You may already know that the Tram ferries its excited passengers to more than 8500 feet elevation, 2 ½ miles straight up the cliffs of the Chino Canyon in the world’s largest rotating tram car. The views of the Coachella Valley are simply breathtaking and I think it is fair to say there is probably no place else in the Valley that offers the panoramic vistas of sheer beauty that the Tram does.
Dinner at the Pines Café is the perfect way to enjoy an evening with people you love. There is a natural history Museum, two documentary theaters, a gift shop and plenty of hiking trails once you get to the top. Don’t forget to bundle up as the difference in temperature can be as much as 30° all year long. In December, snow is common which makes for a festive holiday outing so the kids and grandkids can build a snowman of their own or have a snowball fight without breaking any windows!
The first car during the special holiday schedule goes up the hill at 8 AM. The last car down is at 9:45 PM which means that you can enjoy the beauty of the night sky including meteor showers or a full moon on the nights when those are available too. Cuddling with a cocktail by the fire is a time honored tradition at the top of the Tram and everyone knows that Santa Claus makes an appearance at least once during this special holiday time. It is always a good idea to call ahead for weather conditions, operating conditions, and other details that might have an effect on your plans.
Where else can you spend the day on the golf course, go for a swim, and then hike in the snow? The unique Coachella Valley offers all of this and more, just a few more reasons why so many people choose to make their home in the greater Palm Springs area. Go out and make it a great week and a memorable holiday season!
