On Saturday, December 3, 2016 the 23rd Annual Palm Springs Festival of Lights Parade will light up the evening starting at 5:45 PM to the delight of Palm Springs area residents all across the Valley. With over 80 entries this year we can expect to see everything from those gorgeous lighted floats to local drill teams, the requisite marching bands, and of course the old gentleman himself, Santa Claus. Starting from Palm Canyon Drive and Ramon Road the parade route is 1.25 miles long and takes about two hours or so to complete.
There are bleachers along the way but my recommendation would be bring your lawn chairs, blankets, and a thermos of hot chocolate. Dress warmly, because desert nights can get cold, especially if the wind kicks up. Of course there will be thousands of people in attendance with everyone in a good mood, plenty of laughter and holiday camaraderie. My family and I always look forward to this annual event with a chance to see the amazing decorations that Palm Springs has placed all along Palm Canyon Drive and the surrounding areas.
Don’t forget there are plenty of perfect spots for dinner before the parade or for a late supper following the parade. If you get cold, you can always duck into one of the eateries along the parade route and get something hot to drink inside. It is just as much fun to view the parade from the comfortable seating of one of the venues along the parade route. Holiday music, bright colors and festive decorations make this one of the most joyous events of the season.
If you are working on your Christmas shopping list this is a perfect opportunity to do a little shopping as well. All of the trendy shops along Palm Canyon will be open all day on Saturday, December 3 for a chance to pick up those unique and one-of-a-kind gifts that can only be found in fashionable Palm Springs. From See’s candy, to resort clothing, to custom-made lotions and perfumes, you will find it all along Palm Canyon Drive. Saturday nights are always fun in downtown Palm Springs but even more so during the Festival of Lights Parade.
Take the opportunity to visit one of the other entertainment venues following the parade if you have time. There are several gala nightclubs, including the Hard Rock Hotel which always has plenty of great dance music on tap. Go out and make it a great week and have a safe and joyous holiday season!
