Martha’s Village 5K Gives Back To The Community

Martha’s Village 5K

Thanksgiving Day is an important family day for most all of us, but there are still those who have unmet needs every day of each year. Thanks to Martha’s Village in Indio thousands of those people from our own Coachella Valley have been well cared for and given opportunities to live productive and fulfilling lives. On Thursday, November 24, The 10th Annual Fortem Financial Martha’s Village 5K Run will get underway at 8:00 AM at El Paseo and San Pablo in beautiful Palm Desert.

Over 4,000 participants and spectators are expected this year, making it the biggest event in its decade-long history of raising funds to help local, impoverished families. Martha’s Village is a safe and welcoming haven for homeless families, children, and individuals. In collaboration with community partners and other organizations and agencies, Martha’s Village is able to leverage resources and bridge the gaps to assure local families of effective and long-term shelter and food. Breaking the cycle of poverty is what this program is all about and they have done a remarkable job since their inception back in 1990.

A 120 bed Transitional Residential Facility makes sure that families can stay together and have a clean and safe environment while they get their lives back on track. But Martha’s Village is so much more than just a homeless shelter. They also provide long-term care, education, vocational training, information, support, and resources to help impoverished individuals and families get back on their feet and become self-sufficient as soon as possible. Last year alone, Martha’s Village helped 6,100 of our friends and neighbors and provided more than a quarter million meals to local folks in need.

The Fortem Financial Thanksgiving Day 5K has become one of the signature holiday traditions in the Valley. The 2015 event was the most popular 5K in the area and this year promises to be even bigger. Each year new sponsors are added and new participants and spectators head to the area to spend Thanksgiving Day doing something healthy and charitable. Personally, I can’t think of a better way to spend the holiday then walking or running outside under this beautiful desert sun and doing it to benefit an organization as important and critical as Martha’s Village. Go out and make it a great week and we hope to see you there!
