One of the hottest and coolest events of the year opens on August 11, 2017 on the campus of the Idyllwild Arts Academy in Idyllwild. The 24th Annual Jazz in the Pines Festival brings in the brightest and the best of blues, jazz, and R&B for three swinging days of fun, art and music. Opening night on Friday, August 11 is the Patrons VIP Dinner and Dance featuring the sounds of Besos de Coco, with Lorraine Castellanos on guitar and vocals, Evona Wascinski on bass and Claudia Gomez Vorce on percussion and tap dance.
Also headlining for the opening night will be the Gilbert Hansen Band, with Gilbert Hansen on base, harmonica, and vocals: Rick Cowling on guitar, keys and vocals: Lenny Hansell on guitar and vocals: and Sal Frisura on drums and vocals. Expect to see all four stages in action all of Saturday and all of Sunday including headliners: The Robert Dove Quintet: Frisson: Evan Christopher’s Clarinet Road: and the Charles McPherson Quintet.
Also on tap for Sunday morning will be the fabulous Voices in Praise Gospel Choir featuring Bob Emmit on piano: Larry Washington on drums and vocals: Brad Bobo on bass and vocals: Yve Evans on piano and vocals: Ava Dupree on vocals: Chystal Matthews on vocals: Kim Foley on vocals: Allison Bobo on vocals: Billy Redd on vocals: and Ricky Taylor on vocals. Later on Sunday the Tamir Hendelman Trio: The Singularity Project: and the Russell Malone Quartet will be on hand to round out the weekend of truly stellar jazz.
This year’s marketplace at the festival will feature almost 20 galleries I more than 200 artists with original works. It’s no wonder it has been voted one of the 100 Best Small Art Towns in America by John Villani. Here you will be able to purchase jewelry, pottery, one-of-a-kind arts and crafts, festival T-shirts, hats and posters. There will also be a wide array of food in drink including Cajun cooking and barbecue, ice cream and smoothies, and so much more.
