For the third consecutive year Palm Springs will celebrate the Fall Preview of Modernism Week at the Palm Springs Convention Center from October 21-23, 2016. Starting with a Friday night peek at the more than 40 world-class exhibitors showing off designs from around the globe, the event will launch into a weekend that celebrates the unique genre and era of Modernism and Midcentury Architecture for which Palm Springs is known.
For those of us in real estate this is a most exciting weekend that stretches into a week long round of enjoying the beauty of the stunning homes. Many of my clients come to the greater Palm Springs area strictly because they are able to indulge in the nostalgic midcentury designed homes that are specific to this area. The big event course, comes in February with our local, signature, Modernism Week put on by the nonprofit organization of the same name.
With the noble mission to preserve and educate, they have done a masterful job of teaching the world all about Modernism, including some of our local designs by the incomparable Frank Lloyd Wright. The exhibitor list reads like a Who’s Who of this fabulous genre including the Blue Heron Gallery from Fallbrook, California: Bridges Over Time at the Palm Springs Art and Design Gallery: Casa Navarro Gallery from Santa Fe, New Mexico: The City of Palm Springs Historic Site Preservation Board: Architecture and Design Council at the Palm Springs Art Museum: Danish Modern NOHO: Hennessey and Ingalls from Los Angeles: Katz Modern from Berkeley: Early California Antiques: Mid-Century Shop from North Hollywood, California: Palm Springs Preservation Foundation: Palm Springs Modern Committee and so many more.
More than just architecture and furniture design, Modernism is a culture and philosophical movement of the 19th and 20th centuries that has transformed so much of the way we view the world. However, during the 1950s and 60s Palm Springs was fortunate enough to have in their midst some of the finest architects and designers in the world. Ushering in a whole new era that was reflected by the beauty of sleek lines in architecture and simple designs and furniture, our local Modernism Movement set the bar very high for the generations to come. Don’t miss the fall preview and an opportunity to shop early for items from around the world that will leave you breathless. Hope to see you there!
