With the 28th Palm Springs International Film Festival scheduled from January 2-16, 2017 we have the pleasure of welcoming you to the festival for another year of the best feature-length films and documentaries from every corner of the globe. This year the festival is slated to be bigger and better than ever with an amazing 190 movies from 72 countries along with a host of other related events as well.
Monday, January 2 the Black Tie Awards Gala will welcome such A-List luminaries as Tom Hanks, Casey Affleck, Cate Blanchett, and Natalie Portman along with a distinguished list of the most important people in Hollywood. The film screenings get underway on January 5 with all the other events comprising a packed calendar for two full weeks of enjoyment for everyone in the Valley. One of the largest festivals of its kind in the world, the Palm Springs Film Festival is considered a sure sign of things to come for the Academy Awards in February. Many of the films screened at the festival go on to win Oscars every year.
One of the festival’s most popular events is “Book to Screen” which explores the connection between written works and the silver screen. This is a two day event starting at 10 AM on Tuesday at the Mary Pickford Theater in Cathedral City. The four films that will be featured are “Denial,” “Arrival,” “The Late Bloomer,” and “13 Hours,” all of which were originally books that have been adapted for film.
On Wednesday, a symposium will be held at the Horizon Ballroom of the Hilton Hotel in Downtown Palm Springs during which authors and screenwriters will discuss the relationships between written works and film as forms of storytelling. Over two of the nights of the festival, January 9 and 11, a very special event will get the local Palm Springs restaurants involved. The first event will feature a Japanese fusion meal at Pho 533 paired with Juzo Itami’s brilliant 1985 film “Tampopo.” Then on the 11th, the second event will feature the film “Insatiable” The Homaro Cantu Story” paired with a wonderful dinner at lounge Eight4Nine.
For what is certain to be the biggest and best Palm Springs International Film Festival on record, be sure to get your tickets right away so you won’t be disappointed. Here’s hoping 2017 is your most exciting and rewarding year ever and we hope to see you at the festival!
